Flu Pneumonia Vaccination

See this link to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) page on pneumonia vaccination:  https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/pneumo/index.html.  There are two commonly-used vaccines for prevention of pneumonia caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Pneumoniae.  Although this is not the only bug that causes pneumonia, it is the most common bacteria that causes pneumonia.

CDC recommends pneumococcal conjugate vaccination (aka Prevnar 13) for:

  • All babies and children younger than 2 years old
  • All adults 65 years or older
  • People 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions

CDC recommends pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (aka Pneumovax 23) for:

  • All adults 65 years or older
  • People 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions
  • Adults 19 through 64 years old who smoke cigarettes
